Although every single game in the series has its own storyline, they are always centered on the titular "Twisted Metal" competition, which is a battle royale between vehicles that takes place once every year.
In practically all of the games, a man who goes by the name "Calypso" serves as the host. However, in the fourth part of the series, long-time competitor Sweet Tooth temporarily fills in for Calypso.
Aside from the other competitors, one-of-a-kind cars that appear to have been designed by the host themselves may stand in the way of the competitors' progress. The overarching objective is to eliminate all of the rivals.
The victor is then presented to the tournament's organizer, who decides whether or not to grant the victor's one desire.
The individuals who are capable of bending reality itself in order to grant the winner of the competition their wish are the ones who run these games; they do this through mysterious techniques.
However, there is a common "be careful what you wish for" theme throughout the game series, since almost all of the winning participants end up with "not-so-happy" endings,
because the hosts have the ability and want to twist the words of their wish around, frequently to lethal effect, this is how they get their way.
The games in the series typically have a satisfying helping of satire or dark humor.
